District Information Sherman County School District #1 was created in 1994 when Rufus Elementary School District, Wasco Grade School District, South Sherman Elementary, and Sherman Union High School District unified into one county-wide school district. The Sherman Union High School Board became the governing body for the new district. The five board members are nominated by zone and elected at large. The board is served administratively by a superintendent, deputy clerk and part-time confidential secretary. The district office is located at Sherman Elementary School in Grass Valley, where the superintendent is also the Elementary Principal. The District operates one K-6 elementary school and a junior/high school (grades 7-12). Sherman County School District is considered both rural and remote. The two schools are separated by 9 miles. Sherman County School District is the only school district in the county. There are no private schools in Sherman County and very few youngsters are home schooled. Sherman County School District is one of six school districts in three counties served by North Central ESD.
