Tomorrow is a No School Day, for Staff & Students

The favorite part of my day was… Eating two made from scratch meals from our kitchen today…breakfast burritos & the quickly super popular chicken enchiladas with red sauce. From Miss Darcy working to obtain fresh food grants, to Miss Heidi & Miss Citlalli bringing some of their favorite recipes to our students & staff…our improved nutritional offerings are a direct byproduct of our kitchen team’s efforts! The favorite part of my day was… Dropping in on our middle school ASB leadership meeting during TAT this morning as they were planning to make a pitch to the high school ASB students to request funding for their upcoming event…& getting word from Mr. Swenson that our advanced soils team qualified for nationals! It can be easy to take the success of our programs for granted…& yet if & when you remember to take a step back & see our community for what it is, it’s an excellent reminder that behind every successful team or project or program are incredibly dedicated individuals who sacrifice their time & dedicate their expertise & skills in order to help our students have outstanding learning experiences. It is not a coincidence that Sherman County School has had 3 regional teachers of the year in the past 5 years alone. Our students do not have average teachers & staff, & our successful programs are evidence of this. Our staff know that good is the enemy of the great & they are continuously striving for greatness. The favorite part of my day was… Listening to the senior volleyball players’ introductions on senior night…& Watching Mrs. Cranston’s Chemistry class begin their Flame Test Lab…seeing absolutely 100% student engagement, one of our top areas of focus as a school. The Sherman County School District Board of Directors will hold a Regular Board Meeting on Monday, October 12, 2026 in the Sherman County Public/School Library Program Room at 6:00 p.m. An executive session will take place in accordance with ORS 192.660(2)(b), ORS 192.660(2)(f) and ORS 192.600(2)(h). The favorite part of my day was… Getting pictures & a message from Mr. Swenson about our soils evaluation teams placing 1st in both beginning & advanced divisions as well as our students occupying 6 of the top 10 places as individuals! The favorite part of my day was… Visiting 5th grade and listening to them read aloud to each other in small groups…not only a good practice but also a confidence builder for our students…developing confident independent learners remains one of our top focuses & priorities building-wide. The favorite part of my day was… Seeing our students & staff get shoutouts in the recent edition of the Citizen Reporter…& Mr. Baker visiting with me at the end of the day to tell me about some big successes in his math class today as well as how much he is loving being part of our team and school community. The favorite part of my day was… Seeing Mrs. Miller’s elementary PE white board after yesterday’s run tests…& the flier in the staff room for Mr. Hansen’s live music event this weekend along with him singing the national anthem at the home volleyball game. The favorite part of my day was… Seeing the 4th grade class-created constitution & artwork…& visiting one of our new elective classes, Speech & Debate, & listening to 8th grade students deliver speeches on a topic of their choice of something they believe should be banned…followed by open discussions on the components of the speech as peers provided constructive feedback with Mr. Dorzab’s guidance & facilitation. The favorite part of my day was… Seeing 8th grade English class start with intention…a roadmap for the class, a goal, & a clear descriptor of what success will look like…watching students use their planners to stay organized…listening to students talk about how much they’re enjoying the current novel they’re reading…& hearing them analyze a poem about making a better world…all of this, & more, observed in less than 5 minutes. If we are disciplined & mindful of what we give our attention to, it is easy to see all of the growth, improvements, & best practices happening right in front of our eyes. The favorite part of my day was… Watching our very own Mr. Swenson be surprised with the Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year Award today at our school assembly in front of his students, peers, and family…Mr. Swenson is not only a top Ag & FFA teacher in the state but an overall excellent educator & more than deserving of this award. The favorite part of my day was… Hearing about the 3-day FFA Leadership camp…being one of 8 schools at camp & having 5 of our students earn individual awards along with earning 2nd in beginning & advanced rituals. The favorite part of my day was… Seeing the intentionality in our youngest grades classrooms of explicitly teaching our students HOW we do school. We cannot effectively teach & learn the academics until we can properly, effectively, & efficiently operate in a school environment. The month of September is all about teaching & learning routines & procedures & our elementary staff are second to none when it comes to setting our students up for success. The favorite part of my day was… Hearing the NOAA guest speakers in Earth Science…& seeing the finished product of a team project that is making our front lobby look sharp!
